Tokyo Police Arrest Chinese Student for Ginza Pepper Spray Attack

The Tokyo Metropolitan Police have arrested a 24-year-old Chinese university student in connection with a pepper spray attack that occurred in May at the GINZA SIX commercial complex. The suspect, a resident of Osaka, allegedly targeted a man in his 30s at an ATM booth using a substance containing capsaicin.

The incident caused significant distress, with approximately 30 people reporting symptoms such as eye and throat irritation, and 25 individuals being transported to hospitals for medical attention. Investigators noted that the suspect appeared to have prepared for the attack by wearing a black face mask to avoid exposure to the spray, which he discarded along with a hoodie while fleeing the scene.

Police are currently searching for another individual seen on security footage conversing with the suspect immediately before the incident. The suspect has reportedly declined to comment on the allegations, stating, “I don’t wish to speak.”
