Tokyo police arrest man for smuggling 200 lizards

Japanese authorities arrested 23-year-old Mexican national Daniel Isaac Velasco Baltazar at Tokyo-Haneda Airport on August 8 after discovering approximately 200 live lizards in his luggage. Customs officials found the reptiles concealed within 22 pairs of socks and T-shirts. The suspect arrived on a flight from South Korea.

Among the seized animals, investigators identified nine Mexican alligator lizards (Abronia graminea), an endangered species native to the highland forests of Mexico's Sierra Madre Oriental. International trade of this species requires government permits. Other lizard species found in the shipment are still undergoing identification. One dead lizard was also recovered during the inspection.

Velasco Baltazar admitted to violating Japanese customs laws by failing to declare the animals upon entry. Authorities believe the reptiles were intended for sale or exhibition within Japan. The investigation is ongoing to determine the full origin of the shipment and the intended market.
