Tokyo to convert Yaesu parking garage into missile shelter

The Tokyo Metropolitan Government announced that the Yaesu underground parking garage near Tokyo Station will be converted into a missile shelter, the city’s second such facility after the Azabu‑Juban station shelter.

Governor Yuriko Koike said the site was chosen because it is close to the capital’s main gateway and attracts large numbers of people outdoors. The shelter will cover about 13,000 sqm on the first and second basement levels, with plans for reinforced doors and other blast‑mitigation features. Detailed surveys are to begin this fiscal year. The move responds to heightened security concerns stemming from North Korea’s recent ballistic‑missile launches and China’s expanding weapons arsenal.
