Tokyo transportation: JR East fare hikes and new City Pass
JR East has implemented a fare revision affecting commuter passes, specifically impacting routes such as Tokyo to Shinjuku. Following the March 2026 price adjustments, a one-month commuter pass for this route has increased from 6,290 yen to 7,840 yen. The annual financial impact varies depending on the pass duration: purchasing twelve one-month passes results in an annual increase of 18,600 yen, while two six-month passes result in an increase of 22,720 yen.
In a separate development for Tokyo tourism, Tokyo Metro and Linktivity have renewed the ‘Tokyo City Pass’. The updated pass offers a combination of transportation, cultural experiences, and dining. The base pass, which includes a 24-hour Tokyo Subway Ticket, various cultural experiences, and gourmet coupons, is currently available at a limited-time promotional price of 1,900 yen, down from its standard 2,400 yen value. The pass is available to both international tourists and domestic residents.
