Tokyo Verdy appoints Naoki Soma as new manager
Tokyo Verdy has announced the appointment of Naoki Soma as the club's new manager. The decision follows the termination of Hiroshi Shirofuku's contract on October 5, after the team struggled through an eight-match winless streak in the J1 League this season.
Soma, who played for Verdy in 2002 and has managed clubs including FC Machida Zelvia and Kawasaki Frontale, expressed his commitment to the team, stating he will work “without setting limits” to secure victories.
The club issued a rare statement explaining that Soma was chosen because his vision for the future aligns with Verdy's goal of evolving from a mid-table side into a club capable of competing for the J1 championship. The club aims to refine its defensive pressing and develop a more aggressive, goal-oriented attacking style under his leadership.
