Tokyu and JR Hokkaido announce 2027 Hokkaido cruise train details

Tokyu Corporation and JR Hokkaido have announced details for the 2027 summer cruise of ‘THE ROYAL EXPRESS – HOKKAIDO CRUISE TRAIN’. Following the conclusion of operations using the Izukyu 2100 series vehicles in September 2026, the brand will transition to utilizing JR Hokkaido’s new ‘Akai Hoshi’ (Red Star) train set.

The ‘Akai Hoshi’ train, designed by Eiji Mitooka, features a deep red exterior inspired by the symbol of the Hokkaido Development Commission. The interior includes wood-heavy decor, a salon for conversation, a lounge car for dining, and tatami-matted rooms.

Scheduled for August and September 2027, the cruises will consist of 3-night, 4-day itineraries running approximately eight times over two months. Two primary routes are planned:

1. A route through the eastern Hokkaido area, traveling from Sapporo to Obihiro, then to Abashiri, staying in Nakafurano, and returning to Sapporo. 2. A route via the Hakodate Main Line, traveling from Sapporo to Nakafurano, then to Otaru, moving to Toya, and returning to Sapporo.

The initiative aims to promote tourism and regional revitalization in Hokkaido.
