Toledo: Historical accounts of 1936 executions
Historical accounts detail a period of intense violence in Toledo during August 1936. Following a mistaken bombing by Republican aircraft that killed their own militia members near the Alcázar, retaliatory actions were taken against prisoners.
In the early hours of August 23, approximately 80 people, including priests and members of Catholic associations, were executed at the Puerta del Cambrón. These killings were reportedly premeditated by prison authorities and fueled by the anger surrounding the aerial error.
On August 24, the violence continued with the execution of Brother Jorge Luis Lizasoáin Lizaso of the Marist Community. After being identified in the prison kitchen, he was subjected to questioning regarding his religious beliefs before being killed. Witnesses noted that he expressed a desire to die for his faith during the confrontation.
