Toledo installs plaque honoring cyclist Federico Martín Bahamontes
On 8 August 2026, the Toledo City Council installed an informational plaque at the base of the statue of former Tour de France winner Federico Martín Bahamontes, three years after the cyclist’s death. The ceremony was led by councilor Rubén Lozano, accompanied by municipal officials and César Duro, director of the Fundación Soliss. The plaque, added after a request from cycling fans, lists Bahamontes’ major achievements – his 1959 Tour de France victory, multiple King of the Mountains titles in the Tour and the Vuelta a España, and other notable wins.
Lozano said the addition corrects the lack of visible information since the statue’s inauguration in 2018 and highlighted the city’s ambition to host a stage of the Vuelta a España in 2028, coinciding with the centenary of Bahamontes’ birth. He also noted that plans for a museum dedicated to the cyclist remain uncertain due to ongoing legal and inheritance matters.
