Ushuaia celebrates 142nd anniversary with record crowds

Ushuaia celebrated its 142nd anniversary with a series of commemorative events, including a massive civic-military parade that drew a record crowd of approximately 28,000 people. The festivities featured participation from over 150 local institutions and concluded with a large-scale community paella in Plaza Islas Malvinas.

Mayor Walter Vuoto and Governor Gustavo Melella led the ceremonies, emphasizing the city’s historical identity and the importance of national sovereignty. Vuoto referenced the 1884 arrival of Commander Augusto Lasserre, who raised the Argentine flag in the bay, as a foundational moment for the region. Other celebrations included the traditional Dinner of Old Settlers, which honored the pioneers who established the community.

In addition to the historical commemorations, the city’s leadership and business sectors discussed future growth. The Chamber of Tourism highlighted Ushuaia’s potential to expand its role as a logistical and service hub for Antarctic activities, moving beyond traditional cruise tourism to include scientific and operational support.
