Toll Group launches hydrogen prime movers in Australia

Toll Group has launched its first hydrogen fuel cell electric B-double prime movers in a partnership with Viva Energy Australia and BlueScope Steel. Supported by the Australian Federal Government’s ARENA funding program, the initiative aims to demonstrate the viability of hydrogen in decarbonizing heavy haulage operations.

The new vehicles are being used to deliver steel from BlueScope’s Hastings facility and are fueled at Viva Energy Australia’s Hydrogen Hub, which serves as the country’s first 24/7 public hydrogen refueling station. Each prime mover has an estimated driving range of 300 kilometers and can be refueled in approximately 20 minutes.

Environmentally, the transition is expected to reduce diesel consumption by roughly 80,000 liters per vehicle annually. This shift is projected to avoid approximately 208 tonnes of carbon emissions per vehicle each year compared to traditional diesel-powered models.
