Argentina: Toll hikes and urban protests spark local backlash
Various local issues in Argentina are drawing attention, including significant criticism from the National Committee for the Defense of Road Users (CONADUV) regarding toll increases in the Province of Buenos Aires. The organization reported that hikes ranging from 9 to 23 percent on highways such as Buenos Aires-La Plata and Route 6 constitute a “revenue-raising adjustment” that benefits the concessionaire, AUBASA, rather than improving road conditions.
In Boulogne, residents have rejected the ‘Urbana Santa Rita’ urban project, protesting the potential loss of three hectares of green space and the negative impact a new supermarket might have on local businesses. They are demanding the area be designated as a public park instead.
In the transport sector, local taxi drivers (remiseros) are calling for regulatory reforms to create a level playing field with digital ride-hailing applications. Meanwhile, in Rosario, a proposal to create modular urban shelters for delivery workers has received favorable consideration from the Public Works Commission to provide rest areas and essential services for platform workers.
