Toluca deputy launches contest to reward citizens for reporting worst potholes

Deputy Ruth Salinas Reyes has launched a contest in Toluca to award citizens up to 5,000 pesos for reporting the city’s “worst pothole.” The initiative aims to highlight urban neglect and the perceived failure of Mayor Ricardo Moreno’s road maintenance programs.

The contest offers tiered cash prizes based on the size and frequency of the potholes: 5,000 pesos for the largest and oldest, 2,500 pesos for medium-sized ones, and 1,500 pesos for small, recurring issues. Salinas Reyes stated the funds are intended to help citizens cover mechanical repair costs, such as broken tires or rims, caused by the deteriorating road conditions.

Critics and residents have noted that despite significant budgets allocated for road maintenance, the quality of repairs is poor and often fails after rainfall. The contest serves as a way to pressure authorities to address the growing infrastructure crisis in the municipality.
