Toluca Mayor Ricardo Moreno Launches Tree Replacement on Paseo Colón

Toluca’s municipal government, led by Mayor Ricardo Moreno, began replacing 24 dead trees along the historic Paseo Colón. The first phase saw eight "encinos siempre verdes" (ever‑green oaks) planted, with the remaining sixteen kept in the municipal nursery until conditions allow transplantation. The trees, about ten years old and seven metres tall, were selected for their native resilience and will feature QR codes linking to detailed information.

The project, coordinated by the city’s Public Services, Environment, and Parks departments, aims to eliminate safety hazards posed by the previously dead trees and to restore urban green space. María del Carmen Soto, Director General of Medio Ambiente, explained that each removed tree’s root system is fully extracted and the soil is amended with compost to ensure optimal growth. Miguel Ángel González Colín, delegate of the Asociación Mexicana de Arboricultura, highlighted the species’ suitability for Toluca’s climate and its environmental benefits.
