Tom Aspinall vacates UFC heavyweight title due to eye injuries

Tom Aspinall has vacated the UFC heavyweight championship due to persistent medical complications involving his eyes. The 33-year-old British fighter has been unable to secure medical clearance to compete since October 2025, following a no-contest bout against Ciryl Gane caused by accidental eye pokes.

Aspinall revealed that despite undergoing multiple surgeries and attempting to return to training, a recent accident during sparring caused further damage to his right eye. In a statement, he noted, “I don’t want to hold up the heavyweight division,” emphasizing his desire to allow other contenders the opportunity to compete for the title.

With Aspinall stepping aside, interim champion Ciryl Gane is expected to be promoted to undisputed heavyweight champion. The vacancy has sparked discussions regarding potential challengers, including Alex Pereira, Josh Holkit, and the possible return of Jon Jones. Aspinall clarified that vacating the belt does not mean he is retiring from MMA, but rather that he must focus on his recovery.
