Tom Barrack faces scrutiny over Middle East energy project ties

U.S. Ambassador to Turkey Tom Barrack is facing scrutiny regarding his potential role in promoting a $15 billion energy project. Allegations suggest Barrack supported the involvement of TI Capital, a California-based investment firm directed by his long-time business associate Ziad Ghandour, in a plan to restore the Kirkuk-Ceyhan pipeline. This project aims to transport Iraqi oil through Syrian Mediterranean coasts, potentially bypassing the Strait of Hormuz.

Reports indicate that Barrack had declared financial interest in a separate real estate investment scheme managed by TI Capital near San Francisco, which could have yielded him up to 20% of the profits upon meeting certain objectives. This situation has raised questions in the U.S. Congress regarding the intersection of personal business interests and diplomatic authority.

Separately, speaking at the Global Security Forum in Doha, Barrack addressed U.S. policy in the Middle East. He acknowledged that decades of attempting to impose political solutions from abroad have not achieved desired results. He suggested that while the U.S. will maintain a presence in the region, it intends to shift more responsibility for security and stability to regional powers rather than attempting to control internal political developments.
