Tom Boonen reveals extortion attempt after world title win

Former cyclist Tom Boonen has revealed details regarding an extortion attempt following his world championship victory in Madrid. During a retrospective on the talk show ‘Happy Hour’, Boonen described the intense celebrations that followed his title win.

To prevent losing his valuable memorabilia while celebrating, Boonen entrusted his rainbow jersey and medal to an individual, believing they would be delivered to his parents at the airport. However, the items were instead used as leverage for extortion. The individuals demanded ransom, including an invitation to a specific event, in exchange for the return of the jersey and medal.

Boonen stated that he refused to succumb to the blackmail, insisting that the items be returned. Ultimately, the belongings were returned to him without him meeting the extortionists' demands.
