Tom Cruise stars in Iñárritu’s polarizing new film ‘Digger’
The new film ‘Digger’, directed by Alejandro G. Iñárritu and starring Tom Cruise, is generating significant critical debate ahead of its release. The film is a dark satirical comedy about Digger Rockwell, a powerful oil tycoon whose activities in Greenland trigger a global environmental catastrophe.
Critics are deeply divided on the production. While some praise Cruise for a transformative performance involving extensive prosthetics and a departure from his typical action roles, others have labeled the film ‘pretentious’ or ‘superficial’. Rotten Tomatoes currently holds a score of approximately 52%, reflecting this polarization. Warner Bros. has responded to the mixed reception with a ‘decide for yourself’ marketing campaign.
Technically, the film is notable for being shot on VistaVision, a vintage 1950s film format that provides a larger frame and higher image quality. Due to the use of original VistaVision projectors, limited screenings are available in select cities including Los Angeles, New York, Boston, London, and Melbourne. The ensemble cast includes John Goodman, Riz Ahmed, Sandra Hüller, Michael Stuhlbarg, and Jesse Plemons.
