Digger film faces commercial struggles despite industry debate

Alejandro González Iñárritu’s climate-themed satirical film, Digger, is facing significant financial difficulties at the box office. Despite an estimated production budget of $180 million, the Warner Bros. Pictures release has reportedly earned only $46 million globally in its first three weeks, leaving it far from the $400 million needed to break even.

The film stars Tom Cruise as Digger Rockwell, a Texas oil tycoon whose drilling operations in Greenland trigger a catastrophic glacier collapse affecting Europe. The narrative utilizes a metafictional structure, revealing early in the film that the character is actually an actor named Curtis performing in a play titled Fossil Fools.

While the film has received mixed reviews from critics, it has sparked intense debate among filmmakers and scientists. Directors such as Denis Villeneuve, Guillermo del Toro, and Ron Howard have defended the project, praising its ambition and cinematic complexity. The film’s portrayal of fossil fuel extraction and corporate accountability remains a central point of discussion.
