Tom Homan defends ICE detention standards amid rising migrant deaths

Border czar Tom Homan engaged in a confrontation with CBS News immigration correspondent Camilo Montoya-Galvez regarding the number of migrant deaths in Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) custody.

Montoya-Galvez cited official ICE data indicating that 57 people have died in agency custody so far under the current administration, noting that 2026 could potentially set a new record high. Homan characterized the inquiry as a “loaded question” and challenged the reporter to provide comparable death statistics from the Biden administration.

Homan defended the agency's protocols, asserting that ICE maintains detention standards higher than any state or federal institution. He attributed the increase in deaths to a significant rise in the detainee population, stating that the number of individuals in custody has reached approximately 74,000.
