Rep. Ilhan Omar faces federal investigation into citizenship and fraud allegations

Representative Ilhan Omar is under federal investigation regarding potential immigration fraud and the circumstances of her U.S. citizenship. The probe focuses on whether Omar or her late father, Nur Omar Mohamed, misrepresented her birth year on immigration documents to facilitate her citizenship in 2000. Investigators are examining whether she was a minor at the time or if she was already 18, which would have required a separate application.

Federal agents recently searched Omar’s Washington, D.C., residence, seizing her personal passport, cellphone, laptops, and notebooks. Reports indicate that authorities are also in possession of DNA evidence, which investigators may use to pursue conspiracy charges related to a 2009 marriage to Ahmed Nur Said Elmi, allegedly intended to assist him in obtaining a green card. Additionally, House Oversight Chairman James Comer has raised allegations regarding financial irregularities involving a winery co-owned by Omar’s husband, Timothy Mynett.

President Donald Trump has commented on the case, stating his opinion that Omar could face both deportation and imprisonment. White House border czar Tom Homan stated that federal investigators have a ‘strong case’ and that the outcome would depend on the evidence. Former President Barack Obama has condemned the investigation, characterizing it as ‘appalling’ and a politically motivated attempt to target a prominent critic of the administration. Omar has denied all wrongdoing, calling the investigation political persecution.
