Tomáš Jiřikovský appeals decision to remain in custody in bitcoin case

Tomáš Jiřikovský, a defendant in a major bitcoin-related criminal case, has filed an appeal against the Brno Regional Court's decision to keep him in custody. The appeal will now be reviewed by the High Court.

Jiřikovský has been in detention since August of last year. He faces charges including the operation of the darknet marketplace ‘Nucleus Market’, money laundering, and the illegal production and handling of narcotics. Prosecutors allege he attempted to conceal the origins of bitcoins derived from criminal activities, including a donation of bitcoins to the Ministry of Justice.

The prosecution is seeking a total sentence of 20 years for the operation of the darknet market and money laundering, though he could face up to 30 years in prison under the broader indictment. While Jiřikovský has indicated potential cooperation regarding certain aspects of the indictment, he has not yet cooperated with police. A date for the main trial has not yet been set.
