Tom Morello discusses his biracial identity and upbringing
Rage Against the Machine guitarist Tom Morello has expressed surprise that many fans remain unaware of his biracial heritage. During a recent appearance on the Broken Record podcast, Morello noted that some audience members experience “cognitive dissonance” when he discusses his African American identity.
Born in Harlem in 1964 to a Kenyan diplomat, Ngethe Njoroge, and a mother of Irish and Italian descent, Morello was raised in Libertyville, Illinois. He described his upbringing as a unique experience in a town where he was the only Black resident, noting that his race made him stand out and occasionally led to racial hostility.
Morello linked his background to his musical career, observing that his band often appeared in rock publications and on radio stations that did not traditionally feature Black artists.
