Tomáš Taraba faces resignation demands from SNS leader Andrej Danko

A political dispute within Slovakia's ruling coalition is intensifying between the Slovak National Party (SNS) and Environment Minister Tomáš Taraba. SNS leader Andrej Danko has called for Taraba's resignation, stating that the minister should never have been appointed and accusing him of failing to honor a May agreement to step down if relations with the party did not improve.

Danko has also raised allegations regarding suspicious public procurement, claiming a 500 million euro tender and 2 million euros in state contracts were allegedly awarded to a neighbor and friend of Taraba. In response, SNS has identified State Secretary Filip Kuffa as the candidate to replace Taraba. Kuffa has criticized Taraba, describing him as an agent acting to disrupt nationalist forces.

Taraba has rejected the calls for his resignation, specifically denying that he will step down by the September 15 deadline proposed by SNS. He has also dismissed claims that Kuffa will become the new minister. Prime Minister Robert Fico previously set a September deadline for the parties to resolve their differences, though the conflict remains unresolved.
