Tomáš Taraba political future debated in new SCIO poll

A recent SCIO poll indicates that nearly 20 percent of Slovak respondents believe Environment Minister Tomáš Taraba should establish his own political party. While a larger portion of the population—approximately 39 percent—prefers that he join an existing political entity, the prospect of a new party has significant implications for the current governing coalition.

The survey highlights that support for a Taraba-led party is particularly high among voters of the coalition partners Smer-SD and SNS, with over 27 percent of their supporters favoring the idea. Support also extends to voters of opposition parties, including Repúblika, Právo na pravdu, and Democrats.

SCIO analyst Martin Klus noted that while these figures should not be confused with actual electoral potential, they demonstrate that a separate political project could disrupt the national-conservative segment of the political spectrum.
