Tom Tiffany gains massive fundraising lead in Wisconsin governor race
Republican Congressman Tom Tiffany has secured a significant fundraising advantage in the Wisconsin gubernatorial race, raising over $26 million in a recent two-month period. According to campaign finance reports, more than $24 million of these funds were funneled through the Republican Party of Wisconsin, largely driven by three major donors: Diane Hendricks, owner of ABC Supply, and Richard and Elizabeth Uihlein, owners of Uline Corp.
This influx of capital places Tiffany well ahead of his Democratic opponent, Milwaukee County Executive David Crowley, who has raised approximately $10.2 million to $12 million. The surge in spending is facilitated by a 2015 change in state law that allows political parties to raise and transfer unlimited funds to candidates.
While the state GOP described the fundraising as a sign of unity and a strong competitive edge, critics and opponents have raised concerns regarding the influence of billionaire donors. David Crowley accused Tiffany of being willing to ‘sell the state of Wisconsin... to the highest bidder,’ while the Wisconsin Democracy Campaign noted that such massive donations can make voters feel sidelined.
