Tom Van Asbroeck discusses AI in cycling and contract departure

Belgian cyclist Tom Van Asbroeck has revealed that artificial intelligence is increasingly influencing professional cycling, though it has not yet fully revolutionized the sport. Van Asbroeck noted that AI models played a role in his selection for the Tour de France this season, stating that he appeared in nine out of ten top-eight candidate lists for his team.

While teams like Visma | Lease a Bike and UAE Emirates are actively integrating AI through partnerships with companies like Mistral AI or developing custom data bots, experts suggest the technology is currently used for data monitoring rather than total tactical control. Team leaders emphasize that AI is used to analyze courses, scan major races for tactical opportunities, and monitor rider fitness curves, but it is not used to make final roster decisions.

Separately, Van Asbroeck expressed surprise at being denied a contract renewal by the NSN Cycling Team. Despite eight years of service and a role as a mentor, a shift in team structure and sponsor goals for the 2027 season resulted in the 36-year-old rider being excluded from the team's future plans.
