Tom Westley resigns as Essex cricket captain

Tom Westley has resigned as captain of Essex County Cricket Club after six years in the role. Westley, who took over from Ryan ten Doeschate in January 2020, announced his decision following the club’s final match against Glamorgan.

Westley cited personal performance as a primary factor for his departure, stating, “Personally, I feel that my biggest value is scoring runs and contributing to Essex victories, something which I haven’t been able to achieve this year.” He expressed a desire for the club to explore a new direction following a period of declining form. Under his leadership, Essex secured the Bob Willis Trophy in 2020 and achieved top-four finishes in the County Championship for three consecutive seasons between 2022 and 2024.

The club finished the 2026 season in eighth place in Division One, but their status in the division remains uncertain. Leicestershire has appealed a 27-point deduction received during the season; if the appeal is successful and the points are reinstated, Leicestershire would move ahead of Essex in the standings, potentially resulting in Essex's relegation.
