Tomar and Mação to receive Starlink equipment for emergency use
The municipalities of Tomar and Mação in Portugal are set to receive Starlink satellite equipment to ensure communication capabilities during emergency situations. This initiative is part of a government program established following communication failures experienced during storms earlier this year.
Tiago Carrão, the president of the Tomar City Council, stated that the equipment is expected to arrive in the coming days through the Portugal Recovery and Resilience Plan (PTRR). In addition to satellite technology, local authorities are awaiting the delivery of generators, which are considered essential for maintaining communications during prolonged power outages.
Carrão noted that the need for these tools became evident during the response to Storm Kristin in late January, where communication breakdowns were a significant concern. Officials in Mação have also been notified that their municipality will be included in the distribution, though the exact number of units allocated remains unconfirmed.
