Tomar approves 900,000 euro historic property purchase
The municipality of Tomar has approved the acquisition of a property in the historic center for 900,000 euros, despite opposition from Socialist Party (PS) councilors. The building, located at Largo do Pelourinho, is owned by Air Liquide Portugal, Limitada.
Mayor Tiago Carrão (PSD) stated the purchase is a strategic investment to create a new museum space. The property, which previously served as a family home and a laboratory for photographer Silva Magalhães, was originally intended for a company that is now based at the Polytechnic Institute of Tomar.
A market valuation placed the property at 910,000 euros, while municipal services estimate rehabilitation costs at approximately 1.6 million euros. Socialist councilors voted against the measure, questioning the scale of the investment.
