Tomar to celebrate 400 years of Santa Iria Fair
The city of Tomar is preparing a special edition of the Santa Iria Fair to celebrate its 400th anniversary. The event is scheduled to take place from October 16 to 25, 2026.
Originally established by a royal charter from Filipe III of Portugal on October 3, 1626, the fair replaced a previous market dedicated to Saint Andrew. Over four centuries, the event has evolved from a vital commercial hub for goods such as textiles, tools, and food into a cultural tradition that blends history with music and modern animation.
Key traditions include a procession in honor of Saint Iria, the city's patron saint, which features children throwing flower petals into the Nabão River.
