Tomar to implement two-euro tourist tax in November

The municipality of Tomar will begin charging a tourist tax of two euros per person per night starting November 1. The regulation, published in the Diário da República, applies to various types of tourist accommodation, including hotels, guesthouses, local lodging, rural tourism developments, and campsites.

The tax applies to guests aged 13 and older for a maximum of five consecutive nights per stay. The municipal government expects to collect approximately 300,000 euros annually, based on an estimated 150,000 taxable overnight stays after exemptions. Local authorities stated the revenue will be used to compensate for the costs associated with increased tourism, specifically for heritage conservation, public space maintenance, destination promotion, and cultural revitalization.

Exemptions are provided for children under 13, individuals with a disability of 60% or higher (and up to two companions), veterans, certain students, and those displaced due to health or social emergencies. Additionally, religious pilgrims traveling through the municipality are exempt from the tax for the first night of their journey upon providing proof.
