Tomato and Zucchini Harvest Tips: Prune Leaves and Adjust Watering

Gardeners often see lush tomato vines and abundant foliage as a sign of health, but excessive leaf growth can shade fruit and over‑watering signals the plant to keep producing leaves rather than ripening tomatoes. Experts recommend selectively removing the few leaves that cover the fruit clusters and spacing out watering just enough to create mild water stress. This lets more sunlight reach the tomatoes and encourages the plant to concentrate sugars and lycopene, turning green fruit red and sweet within days.

For zucchini, the common mistake is letting the first fruits grow large before picking. A single oversized zucchini monopolises the plant’s nutrients, halting further fruit set. The advised practice is to harvest zucchini early—when they reach 15‑20 cm in length for the long varieties or 8‑10 cm in diameter for the round types. Early picking frees the plant to produce new flowers and a continuous crop throughout the summer.
