Tomato cultivation and efficient home processing tips
Gardening and food preservation enthusiasts can utilize efficient methods for managing tomato crops. For processing large quantities of ripe tomatoes into pulp, a faster alternative to individual peeling involves chopping the tomatoes, boiling them briefly, and then pressing the hot mixture through a sieve or vegetable mill. This method, also recommended by the National Center for Home Food Preservation, allows the skin and most seeds to be removed automatically without manual peeling.
For successful cultivation, tomato seeds should be sown between late February and mid-March. Seedlings typically germinate within 60 to 70 days at 25°C. To avoid frost, seedlings should remain protected until May 1st, with outdoor planting ideally occurring after May 15th. Optimal growing conditions include soil temperatures above 10°C, at least seven hours of daily sunlight, and a spacing of at least 50 cm between plants. Companion planting with basil, lettuce, or marigolds can help protect plants from pests and diseases.
