Tomato research explores disease management and pest repellent properties
Recent agricultural and entomological studies have highlighted diverse properties of tomato plants. In cultivation, tomato brown leaf spot is a significant fungal disease, particularly in greenhouses and tunnels where high humidity favors its development. The disease is identified by irregular yellowish spots on older leaves that turn brown and develop an olive-brown spore coating on the underside. Management involves removing infected leaves, increasing ventilation to reduce humidity, and avoiding wetting the leaves during watering.
Separately, research led by entomologist Michael Roe at North Carolina State University has investigated the natural defense mechanisms of wild tomato varieties. Scientists identified a specific compound, part of a patented substance named IBI-246, which has shown promise in repelling pests. In laboratory settings, the substance demonstrated repellent effects against mosquitoes, ticks, fleas, and cockroaches, with derivatives capable of maintaining these properties for over twelve hours.
