Tomatoes and Herbs: Seasonal Care Tips for Ripening and Pruning

Tomato plants often stay green during the peak of summer because excessive heat, uneven temperature, too much direct sunlight, over‑watering or insufficient nutrients can slow or halt the production of lycopene, the pigment that turns the fruit red. Experts advise providing shade netting, improving ventilation in greenhouses or foil tunnels, keeping a leaf canopy around the fruit, and moderating water and fertilizer applications to restore normal ripening.

Herb plants such as basil, rosemary, mint and other aromatic species benefit from regular summer pruning. Light, frequent cuts keep the foliage young, stimulate new shoots, enhance aroma, and prevent premature flowering or woody growth. Pruning also improves airflow, reducing the risk of fungal problems. Gardeners are encouraged to trim back stems, avoid heavy removal of foliage, and maintain a balanced shape to keep herbs productive throughout the hot months.
