Tomatoes Are Botanically Fruit Though Commonly Treated as Vegetables

Botanical science defines a fruit as the mature ovary of a flowering plant that contains seeds. By this definition, tomatoes qualify as fruit because they develop from the tomato flower and house seeds.

In culinary practice, however, tomatoes are typically used as vegetables, paired with savory dishes rather than sweet ones. The distinction was highlighted in the 1893 U.S. Supreme Court case Nix v. Hedden, which ruled that tomatoes should be classified as vegetables for tariff purposes.

The dual classification influences how tomatoes are discussed in nutrition guidelines, food labeling, and everyday cooking, but scientifically the plant‑based definition remains clear.
