Tomatoes may reduce liver fat, according to new study
A new scientific study published in the journal Nutrients suggests that tomato consumption may significantly reduce liver fat in individuals with Metabolic Dysfunction-Associated Steatotic Liver Disease (MASLD).
Researchers conducted a six-week study monitoring two groups of participants with MASLD. The first group consumed a daily amount of raw tomatoes and tomato sauce, while the control group avoided tomatoes entirely. The results indicated that those who consumed tomatoes experienced a significantly greater reduction in liver fat compared to the control group.
Scientists attribute these potential benefits to the natural antioxidant and anti-inflammatory components found in tomatoes. MASLD is a condition characterized by excess fat accumulation in liver cells, often affecting individuals with diabetes, high cholesterol, or high triglycerides. If left unmonitored, the condition can progress to metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis (MASH), which may lead to cirrhosis or liver failure.
