Toscana virus attention rises after singer Tommaso Paradiso contracts infection
The Toscana virus (TOSV), an arbovirus transmitted by sandflies (phlebotomines), has gained public attention following reports that Italian singer Tommaso Paradiso contracted the infection. The illness forced Paradiso to cancel several scheduled performances, including events at the Arena di Verona.
While many TOSV infections are asymptomatic or present with mild symptoms such as fever, headache, nausea, and muscle aches, the virus can lead to serious neuro-invasive diseases in a small percentage of cases. These complications include meningitis, encephalitis, and peripheral neuropathies.
Health experts, including virologist Fabrizio Pregliasco and officials from the Istituto Superiore di Sanità, note that the virus is endemic to the Mediterranean region and has seen an increase in cases in recent years, potentially linked to extreme or anomalous climatic conditions. There is currently no specific antiviral therapy or vaccine available; prevention relies on avoiding sandfly bites through the use of repellents, protective clothing, and fine-mesh mosquito nets.
