Tommy John, MLB pitcher and surgical namesake, dies at 83

Major League Baseball legend Tommy John has died at the age of 83. His death was confirmed by his wife, Cheryl John, who stated the cause was bladder cancer. He passed away at his home in Lakewood Ranch, Florida.

John is most famously recognized as the namesake of ‘Tommy John surgery,’ a pioneering ulnar collateral ligament reconstruction. The procedure was first performed on him in 1974 by Los Angeles Dodgers physician Frank Jobe after John suffered a torn ligament in his left elbow. At the time, doctors estimated only a 1% chance of him returning to professional pitching. Following a year and a half of rehabilitation, John successfully returned to the mound, a feat that revolutionized sports medicine and extended the careers of thousands of subsequent players.

Over a 26-season career, John won 288 games, including notable stints with the Los Angeles Dodgers and the New York Yankees. He was a four-time All-Star and participated in three World Series. His legacy remains a central part of modern baseball discourse, as the surgical procedure he pioneered continues to be a standard treatment for elbow injuries among active pitchers.
