Tomoka Nishiyama to become Japan's first female professional shogi player
Tomoka Nishiyama, a 31-year-old professional holding four women's shogi titles, has announced her intention to exercise a new regulation from the Japan Shogi Association to become a professional kishi. This move makes her the first woman to enter the regular professional ranks since the association's establishment in 1924.
Nishiyama earned the right to this status after winning the prestigious Hakurei title for a fifth time. Under the new system introduced in 2025, players who achieve five wins in this specific title match are eligible for professional status. She is scheduled to officially join the professional ranks as a fourth-dan in the free class on April 1, 2027.
During a press conference in Tokyo, Nishiyama expressed her desire to compete against stronger players and aim for higher levels of competition. She noted that while she considered her options for two weeks, her drive to face top-tier opponents ultimately guided her decision.
The Japan Shogi Association acknowledged potential logistical challenges, such as managing an increased match schedule for Nishiyama, who will continue to compete in women's title matches alongside her new professional career. Executive Director Daisuke Katagami stated that the association would look into addressing these scheduling and structural issues over time.
