Tompkins County lawmakers to revisit minimum wage debate

Tompkins County lawmakers are preparing to revisit a proposal to increase the local minimum wage following a study by Cornell University’s School of Industrial and Labor Relations Co-Lab. The research indicates that the county’s cost of living is rising faster than New York State’s $16 hourly minimum wage.

Researchers identified a local living wage of $25.08 per hour for a single adult without children, noting that approximately 24,000 county workers currently earn less than that amount. The study highlighted housing and transportation as primary drivers of increased living costs.

The findings will be presented to the Legislature’s Housing and Economic Development Committee on September 2 and the full Legislature on September 15. While advocates argue the increase is necessary to cover basic needs, critics warn that higher wages could increase costs for small businesses, reduce economic activity, or impact workers' eligibility for public benefits. Previous discussions have noted that a local wage increase could lead to legal challenges, potentially making the county a test case for such legislation.
