Nigeria's INEC prepares for 2027 elections amid voter registration updates

INEC 2027 general elections voter registration Nigeria politics election security

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has intensified preparations for Nigeria's 2027 general elections. Chairman Professor Joash Amupitan announced that the National Register of Voters has exceeded 103 million citizens, following three phases of Continuous Voter Registration that added over 10.7 million new registrants.

During a readiness assessment meeting in Enugu, Amupitan directed a review of voter registration records in the South-East and ordered the removal of logistical bottlenecks affecting the distribution of Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs). He also revealed that the Department of State Services (DSS) uncovered and arrested individuals involved in a plot targeting INEC ad hoc staff, specifically members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC).

In response to digital threats, Microsoft has pledged to integrate INEC’s final candidate list into its systems to prevent generative artificial intelligence from creating misleading or unrealistic images of political candidates. This initiative follows the establishment of a dedicated AI unit within INEC to combat disinformation and deepfakes ahead of the 2027 cycle.
