Tomás Yarrington: Mexico's Supreme Court rejects legal appeal
Mexico's Supreme Court of Justice (SCJN) has rejected a request by former Tamaulipas Governor Tomás Yarrington Ruvalcaba to intervene in a legal appeal regarding his formal imprisonment. The court dismissed the request because Yarrington's legal defense was deemed to lack the standing to directly request the attraction of the case, and none of the nine ministers expressed interest in taking up the matter.
Yarrington, who governed Tamaulipas from 1999 to 2004, is currently held at the Altiplano maximum-security prison. He is facing charges in Mexico for organized crime and money laundering. This follows his 2021 guilty plea in the United States for conspiracy to commit money laundering, which resulted in a nine-year prison sentence in March 2023. After being deported to Mexico in April 2025, he has continued to challenge his detention through various legal avenues, including an amparo against a formal imprisonment order issued in June 2025.
