Tonami City hosts annual Shogawa Water Festival

The annual Shogawa Water Festival was held in Tonami City, Toyama Prefecture, featuring the traditional activity known as ‘Ryuboku-nori’ or log riding. The event took place around the Shogawa Water Memorial Park.

In this activity, participants wearing helmets and life jackets balance on logs floating in a specially constructed pool. Competitors attempt to rotate the logs to knock their opponents into the water. The tradition is inspired by the historical practice of transporting timber via the Shogawa River.

The festival, which began in 1985, has included the log riding experience since 1987. Local children and participants expressed enjoyment of the activity, noting the refreshing nature of the water despite the summer heat. The next festival is scheduled for October 11.
