López Beltrán visa revocation sparks political controversy

The U.S. government revoked the tourist visa of Andrés Manuel López Beltrán, son of former Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, on August 11, 2026. In response, López Beltrán sent a letter to Donald Trump, characterizing the decision as a political and propagandistic act.

The controversy is compounded by recent audio recordings released by Latinus, which allegedly link individuals in López Beltrán's inner circle to the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG) in Veracruz. While some analysts suggest the visa revocation may be tied to ongoing criminal investigations, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has stated that the Federal Attorney General's Office (FGR) lacks evidence to initiate criminal proceedings against him.

President Sheinbaum has since declared the matter closed, stating she will no longer comment on the situation. She also denied receiving communications from the U.S. Ambassador regarding the letter sent by López Beltrán.

Separately, in San Pedro Cholula, municipal President Tonantzin Fernández has led the 'Brigada de la Transformación' to perform maintenance and rehabilitation of public spaces in the San Agustín Calvario district, including parks and sports courts.
