Tonga and US agree to modernize government data infrastructure

Tonga and the United States have entered an agreement to modernize the Tongan government’s data centre and network infrastructure. The initiative focuses on enhancing cybersecurity and the resilience of critical public services.

Signed by Prime Minister Lord Fakafanua and US Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau during the 55th Pacific Islands Forum Leaders Meeting in Palau, the agreement will facilitate a feasibility study. This study, funded by the US Trade and Development Agency (USTDA), will assess options for secure hosting of government systems and support the migration of critical data assets to trusted cloud infrastructure.

New York-based CyberCX USA Inc. has been selected by Tonga’s Digital Transformation Department to conduct the technical analysis. The study aims to improve disaster recovery, expand digital public services, and evaluate infrastructure capable of supporting emerging technologies, such as artificial intelligence-powered applications.
