Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games deliver historic netball upset and first medals for Tuvalu

At the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games the Australian netball side, the Diamonds, missed the gold‑medal match for the first time, losing 46‑45 to Jamaica in the semi‑final. Jamaican netball star Cara Koenen highlighted the result as a sign of the sport’s growing competitiveness.

Tuvalu celebrated its inaugural Commonwealth Games medal when 20‑year‑old boxer Tarona Taafaki secured a bronze in the women’s 75 kg division after receiving a bye to the semi‑finals.

Nigeria finished seventh on the medal table with a haul of 24 medals, including 10 golds, highlighted by Samuel Ogazi’s 400 m gold and Ella Onojuvwevwo’s bronze in the women’s 400 m – the nation’s first medal in that event since 1994.

Jamaica added to its track success with Dejanea Oakley winning the women’s 400 m in 50.21 seconds, becoming the fourth Jamaican woman to claim the title, while Jordan Scott earned the country’s first triple‑jump gold.

The Games also featured a strong showing from New Zealand’s Silver Ferns, who reached the netball final despite injuries, and a promising debut for Tonga’s netball team, which aims to become a future powerhouse.
