Tonga rugby league players provide emotional boost to World Cup squad

Tonga’s Rugby League World Cup campaign is being shaped by significant personal narratives involving key players. Sidelined back-rower Eli Katoa has taken on an inspirational role within the squad following a serious medical incident. Katoa has been unable to play since requiring brain fluid drainage after sustaining multiple head blows during a Pacific Championships match against New Zealand last November. An NRL investigation into the handling of his injuries resulted in two-year bans for three medical staff members.

Additionally, Talatau ‘Junior’ Amone has been named in the Tonga squad for their upcoming match against Lebanon. Amone’s inclusion marks a potential turning point in his career after being deregistered by the NRL following a 2022 legal incident in Wollongong. While the NRL has not yet considered a new contract for him to return to top-flight domestic play, World Cup organisers have cleared his selection for the international squad.

Coach Kristian Woolf noted that Amone’s presence in camp represents a significant step forward for the player, who has worked to rebuild his life and career following his previous legal challenges.
