Court of Auditors grants amnesty to Puigdemont and 34 others

Spain’s Court of Auditors has applied the amnesty law to Carles Puigdemont, Artur Mas, and approximately 30 other former Catalan officials. The ruling extinguishes their financial liability regarding expenditures linked to the 2017 independence referendum and the Catalan government’s international promotion of the movement.

The decision follows a ruling by the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU) which determined that the expenses in question did not affect European Union financial interests. This finding removed a primary legal obstacle to applying the amnesty. Consequently, the Court of Auditors has ordered the lifting of precautionary measures, including financial guarantees totaling over 4.2 million euros.

In related developments, former official Toni Comín announced plans to return to Catalonia on October 24 by walking across the border from France. Meanwhile, Carles Puigdemont’s legal team has petitioned Supreme Court Judge Pablo Llarena to apply the amnesty without further delay to achieve institutional normalization.
