Antoni Comín claims European Parliament seat after Madrid appearance
Antoni Comín, the elected Junts MEP, appeared before the Central Electoral Board (JEC) in Madrid on Thursday to fulfill the legal requirement of swearing allegiance to the Spanish Constitution. This procedure allows him to officially access his seat in the European Parliament following recent judicial decisions by Supreme Court magistrate Pablo Llarena, which lifted arrest warrants against him under the amnesty law.
Comín, who has lived in Belgium since 2017, stated that his presence in Madrid was a legal imperative to ensure his ability to represent his voters. He noted that while he has returned to Spain in freedom, he does not consider his period of “exile” to be over until he returns to Catalonia this coming Sunday. He plans to cross the border from France on foot to mark his return.
The completion of this formality is expected to allow the JEC to notify the European Parliament, potentially enabling Comín to participate in the plenary sessions in Brussels as early as November.
